Let me just backtrack for a moment. Ever since my junior year of college (1995), I had worn my college ring. I RARELY took it off. I'd constantly joke with John that the only time the ring would permanently leave my finger, was when it was replaced by an engagement ring. The day before Thanksgiving 2000, I cooked my first turkey (yes, I COOKED). I took my ring off and put it down "where I wouldn't lose it." I haven't seen it since.1 OMEN #1 ;) I found out later that John asked my parents permission to propose to me two days later (the day after Thanksgiving). I didn't know that then, although I suspected something from the look on my dad's face.

On December 19, the crystal I bought at the beginning of our relationship mysteriously broke. In case you missed the little note about it on the Story Page, I bought the crystal because it was supposed to bring unconditional love. OMEN #2 ;) Two days after the crystal broke, John proposed. I suppose the crystal figured its work was done!

Interesting side note: OMEN #3! The day before John proposed, he went out for Chinese food with his boss. He got a very interesting fortune in his cookie! (I now keep the fortune in the box the ring came in tucked away safely in my jewelry box).

I had my last final of the semester on December 21, 2000. It was a long LONG 4.5 hour final and I was EXHAUSTED. John said we were going to go out to dinner to celebrate. I asked him if he was going to pick me up in front of the apartment (rather than having to walk the 1.5 blocks to the parking lot in the freezing cold!). He said, "No, I want to come up for a bit." I whined a bit about how tired I was and how hungry I was, but said fine. He said, "I have a present for you." I figured it was to celebrate my finals being over (I turn into quite an evil person during finals ;)

So, at 6:50pm or so, I decide to call Donna just for the hell of it. For some bizarre reason, she was really excited on the phone! I wasn't really sure why. It kind of threw me a bit, but honestly, I didn't think much of it. I knew she was covering SOMETHING up, but I sure didn't expect this!

John came home around 7:00pm with flowers for me. It was very sweet! He congratulated me for being done with my finals and hugged me. I figured that was the gift. But no... He then told me to stand in the middle of the living room with my eyes closed! I heard him go to the back of the apartment, he came over to me, gave me a kiss, told me how much he loved me, got down on the floor on one knee and asked me to marry him!!!!!!!

I keep joking around to people that I KNEW it was true love because I said "YES YES YES" before even looking at the amazingly beautiful ring!!!!

We then went out to dinner to celebrate. We had lobsters and champagne, and I paid ;). His original plan had been to propose at the restaurant by the water, but the freezing cold temperature and the snow on the ground kinda ruined that plan. I can honestly say I wasn't disappointed!

Apparently, my parents knew, his parents knew, my sister and brother-in-law (Shari and Tim) knew, his sister and brother-in-law (Donna and Jim) knew, etc. After making the phone calls, when I got around to Jim and Donna, I jokingly said to Jim, "By the way, thank your wife for almost F***ING EVERYTHING UP!"... We love Donna, but she's just not the best at keeping exciting secrets ;)

... and then the wedding planning began.

[FN1] The class ring did eventually show up a few months later in the middle of the living room floor. The cats must have stolen it to play with, and then subsequently got bored and gave it back!
